The area was once part of the town of North St. Louis, laid out in 1816 with three circles probably inspired by the contours of Indian mounds. A few of the area’s 600-plus buildings date from that decade. The best known survivor from that era is Crown Candy Kitchen. Over 90% of the buildings are residential, including a number of distinctive red brick rowhouses trimmed with stone lintels from neighborhood quarries.
